I respectfully …
I respectfully disagree that you don’t need a phono preamp. Buying one is hardly a bad strategy. Yes, you can get by without one, but they’re cheap enough that you don’t need to. There are good, inexpensive preamps out there (Behringer makes a nice one for about $20). Buying one is a GOOD strategy, as it will greatly simplify your recording process.

Here is the problem …
Here is the problem regarding vinyl to CD. vinyl starts slighty faster then normal speed and ends slower then normal speed. but the bandwith of the audio is actually supposed to be better then what digital reprocudes. not that the average person can detect but professionals can hear a broader sound of 2 channel stereo output. And 2 track cassetts just lack the analogue bandwith all together. but we know a lot of older music isn’t on CDs. 8 track reel to reel is the best quality.

Thank you. You are awsome! Just a suggestion: you may want to reshoot the video with a better resolution. The screen is hard to see and at times it goes out of focus. Nevertheless, thanks for the demonstration!

I am using Audacity …
I am using Audacity 1.2.6. I did buy a pre amplifier for $22 and it is working well for me. At first it was too loud and everything distorted and I had to eliminate the Microphone boost on my computer. Slime Tron 5000 please comment: you probably know more The only problem I had with them are: 1. I have no line in imput to my sound card and 2. my amplifier is big & bulk and in the basement and is connected to several other components & is a big hassle for me to move it.

Attention record …
Attention record rippers! If you do not have a pre-amplifier, you do not need to buy one! Doing so is a waste of money because it is a bad strategy and you would be wasting your time. Simply buy left and right RCA plugs that are wired to a 3.5 millimetre plug. Connect the left and right RCA plugs to the tape recorder output of your amplifier.

Do not connect to …
Do not connect to the microphone socket. Instead, connect to the line-in socket of your sound card whilst you begin the feed from the RCA tape recorder output. On my integrated amplifier and receiver, the output is called ‘TAPE REC’.

I went further than …
I went further than adjusting my microphone volume and found that there was a microphone boost under “advanced” on my microphone volume control panel. When I took the “boost” it seemed to work exceptionaly well. I am recording to almost the 0 level but reach it very seldom. If I find problems with this I will report on this site.

I record with no preamp and the volume is too low to hear well in a car. I add a custom audio phono preamp with a output level of 500mV and all the recording goes to 0. I adjust the micorphone imput on my computer control panel to low or zero and it makes no difference. ???? Thanks

Monitoring the …
Monitoring the audio using playthrough
The simplest way if you wish to hear what the monitored input sounds like is to go to the Audio I/O tab of Audacity Preferences, and enable Software Playthrough. Don’t enable this option if you are recording sounds the computer is playing with the sound device’s “Stereo Mix” or similar option, because this will lead to echoes or even failure of the recording.

Mr Digiwizz: Please …
Mr Digiwizz: Please tell us more about the turntable. Does it have inbuilt pre-amp? Does not seem possible to run it in without. —With respect of cassettes, they would have their own pre-amp out, so I suppose a nice low level is o.k., but the turntable needs RIAA pre-amp. –That aside, Audacity impresses.

DigiWiz:
My CDs are clear but not loud enough to be heard clearly in the car. Did your turntable have a pre-amp in it? Mine does not. Do you suggest using one? My recording levels never get over the 4/5 level. Also will minimizing Audacity while recording and using my computer for other things at the same time as recording hurt the quality of the recording? Thank you.

Hey tinpax1: You …
Hey tinpax1: You could transfer a cd to a tape by just purchasing a boom-box with a tape recorder, than tape it off the boom-box. You’d need a boom box with a tape recorder, and these usually also have an am/fm radio included in the unit.
